Access to Ancient Olympia

The Ancient Olympia Archaeological Site is located in the western Peloponnese, approximately 290 km from Athens and 120 km from Kalamata, making it easily accessible by car, bus, or train.

🚗 By Car:

  • From Athens: ~ 3.5 – 4 hours via the Olympia Odos and E65 highway.
  • From Kalamata: ~ 1 hour 45 minutes via Route 76.
  • Free parking is available near the entrance.

🚌 By Bus:

  • KTEL Buses run daily from Athens (Kifissos Bus Station) and Patras to Olympia.
  • The bus from Athens to Olympia takes around 4.5 – 5 hours, with a transfer in Pyrgos.

🚆 By Train:

  • Trains from Patras to Olympia run via Pyrgos, though schedules can vary.

📍 Walking Distance:

  • The Ancient Olympia Archaeological Site is within walking distance of the modern town of Olympia, where you’ll find hotels, restaurants, and shops.

The Ancient Olympia Archaeological Site operates on a seasonal schedule:

  • Summer Season (April 1st – October 31st): Open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

  • Winter Season (November 1st – March 31st): Open daily from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Please note that the site is closed on the following holidays:

  • January 1st

  • March 25th

  • May 1st

  • Easter Sunday

  • December 25th and 26th

On certain holidays, the site has adjusted hours:

  • Good Friday: 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM

  • Holy Saturday: 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM

  • You can enter between 15 minutes before and up to 60 minutes after your selected timeslot.
  • Access: The Archaeological Site is just 5 kilometers from Heraklion. You can get there by car or take the bus from Heraklion bus station. There is free parking available near the site’s entrance.

Opening Hours:

From April 1st to August 31st, the site is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
Last admission is at 19:30.

Due to the gradual shortening of daylight hours, the following schedule applies from September 1st:

  • September 1st – 15th: 08:00 – 19:30 (Last admission at 19:00)

  • September 16th – 30th: 08:00 – 19:00 (Last admission at 18:30)

  • October 1st – 15th: 08:00 – 18:30 (Last admission at 18:00)

  • October 16th – 31st: 08:00 – 18:00 (Last admission at 17:30)

Reduced admission:

  • Senior citizens over 65 from Greece or other EU member-states, upon presentation of their ID card or passport for verification of their age and country of origin, during the period from 1st of October to 31st of May.
  • Students of Higher Education Institutes and equivalent Schools from countries outside the EU showing their student ID.
  • To get your reduced admission, please refer to the entrance ticket houses.

Free admission on following dates:

  • 6 March (in memory of Melina Mercouri)
  • 18 April (International Monuments Day)
  • 18 May (International Museums Day)
  • The last weekend of September annually (European Heritage Days)
  • 28 October (National Holiday), and every first and third Sunday of each month from November 1st until March 31st

Free admission is granted to:

  • All persons that are EU citizens under the age of 25 upon showing their Identity Card or passport to confirm their age.
  • Children (under 18) from countries outside the EU.
  • Cultural Card holders.
  • Journalists with a journalist identity card.
  • Members of Societies and Associations of Friends of Museums and Archaeological Sites throughout Greece with the demonstration of certified membership cards.
  • Members of the ICOM-ICOMOS.
  • Persons being at least 50% disabled plus 1 accompanying person.
  • Persons possessing a free admission card.
  • The escorting teachers of schools and institutions of elementary, middle school, high school, university, and graduate-level education during their visits.
  • The official guests of the Greek government, with the approval of the General Director of Antiquities.
  • Tourist guides after demonstrating their professional identity of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
  • University students and students at Technological Educational Institutes or equivalent schools of Member – States of European.
  • Union and students at Schools of Tourist Guides, by showing their student ID.

  • Persons over 25 years who are secondary school students upon demonstrating their international student card.
  • Unemployed Greek citizens, after demonstrating their OAED card.
